Stormy weather in Isaiah

How many of you learned the saying in school: April showers bring May flowers? Sometimes weather shows up in translation. Isaiah 30:30 speaks of God’s majesty and strength as being like cloudbursts, thunderstorms and hail. Quechua doesn’t refer to these things quite like English. See if you can match the English to the Quechua equivalent:

cloudbursts         egg rain

thunderstorms     crazy rain

hail                    lightning & punching

(cloudbursts = crazy rain; hail = egg rain. “Punching” refers to thunder in some Quechua varieties.)

Movie in the making

Good news! Another organization is set to put the JESUS film into one of the Quechua varieties we are working in. The movie is an abbreviated version of the longer movie taken straight from the book of Luke, along with an introduction and conclusion.

Shatu, Felipe and Juan Julio attended an orientation to work on the movie. Our workshop brings these three men together. So, in their free time during this workshop they are usually hunched over the computer working on the script.

Slower progress for a good cause

Shatu & Felipe enlisted the help of the whole team to check their work on the movie script. This means, of course, that instead of leading a discussion on some point of the New or Old Testament translation, Mark is also involved in correcting and making the movie script more natural in Quechua. Even though it’s slowed down our current workshop progress, it’s for a good cause.

Where exactly are we?

When we included the photo of all of our kids in our January Beans’talk, a number of you thought we had been with them for Christmas. Nope. We were in Peru and that photo was a gift from our kids to us.

In March, however, some photos went up on Facebook that showed we were definitely together with family. That brief trip wasn’t advertised. It had been planned for a special family event that ended up not happening. Instead, while still trying to juggle some limited work goals, our family gathered in two groups. The eastern half (Andy & Emily) met near Knoxville. We were in a lovely large mountain home owned by Emily’s friends. Then the other half (Eric and Ernie) met at Ernie’s in Colorado Springs.

Now we are back in Peru, plugging away in a workshop.

Praises and Prayer Requests

Praise: We got a bit of hands-on grandparent time. First with Andy’s wiggly three (Matthew 4, Jeremiah 6, Hannah 2), then with Ernie’s little guys (Remy 7 months, Ender 2).

Praise: that everyone was able to make it to this current workshop and for the good spirit among the team.

Praise: for Luke & Revelation turning dark green along with six new dark green OT boxes: 2 Samuel through Ezra.

Pray: for the movie script to communicate well.

* Pray: We have three weeks after this workshop before the next one starts on May 18th. In that time pray that Mark will finish the consultant check of Isaiah and continue on through Jeremiah chapter 36.

Happy to get in some grandparent time!
