One of our co-workers, Leoncio, was away from translation for 6 months teaching high school language arts in various villages. In the evenings, he taught in the local church. Working through the book of 1 Peter, the believers in one village were surprised to learn two truths.
I never knew the Bible said THAT!
The members of this little church had been taught to avoid town meetings, required work parties, and community events as “worldly.” But 1 Peter 2:13–14 clearly states that we are to respect those in authority.
What!
Surely he had misread it.
No.
Maybe the translation wasn’t correct.
No.
We’ve always heard just the opposite.
All the more reason to dig into God’s word to see if what is being taught actually squares with what God says.
Appearances vs. inward beauty
1 Peter 3:3–5 is the famous passage on true beauty. The Quechua translation makes it clear that it’s not what’s on the outside that makes a woman beautiful. Misunder-standing the Spanish translation, however, many leaders think that the point of the passage is to legalistically prohibit certain kinds of dress, hair styles, jewelry and the like. Once again, the little congregation was surprised to discover that that’s not what God is communicating at all.
Leoncio under the knife
Friday Leoncio seemed just fine as he rec-orded chapters of Genesis. Saturday, howev-er, he called us in pain from the hospital. It turns out he had an emergency appendec-tomy late that night. We thank God he was in the city where he could get help. Pray for an uneventful recovery.
Green New Testament books
If you notice the progress chart below, all of the NT books are now green. YEAH! And, there are a lot more green OT books as well. You’ll also see that some of the green squares are a darker shade. That shows what we’re doing next: reading through the books as a whole, making tweaks for naturalness as we go. When everyone has finished a book, we mark it on our chart a darker shade of green. In the case of OT books, dark green also indicates that key portions have been recorded.
Yes, Rilian arrived
At not quite two months Rilian dressed up for an uncle’s wedding. Big brother Ender turned two yesterday, the 19th. Our son Ernie leaves next week with the army for a work assignment. Join us in praying for Sarah at home with the boys for five weeks.
Praises and Prayer Requests
? Praise: Thank God for Leoncio and others who teach what they’ve learned from God’s word as they’ve worked these many years with Mark.
? Praise: for steady progress forward. Keep praying us to the end. There are lots of details still to take care of.
? Pray: November 10th thru December 5th is our first-ever four week workshop. With just a bit more than a year left to work together, the guys volunteered to meet longer than our usual three weeks. Pray for their families carrying the load at home without husband or dad to help.
Thankful!
