VACATIONING AT OUR FAMILY COTTAGE IN ONTARIO, CANADA
Posted: September 25, 2025

For many years our family has owned and enjoyed spending time at our cottage on a beautiful, quiet lake in Barry’s Bay, Ontario, Canada, north of Toronto and not far from Algonquin Provincial Park. The weeks in the summer and fall that the family is not using the cottage, we offer to christian families for vacationing. This large cottage is a completely furnished lakeside setup with beach, picnic table, and boats. With four full bedrooms and a sunroom with a sleeper sofa, this cottage has capacity for over a dozen people to sleep comfortably, though we limit our guests to no more than eight. It’s a great place to unwind with family or friends for swimming, hiking, fishing, animal watching, and quiet moments by the lake. (No pets or smoking) Creature Comforts: The amenities include hot running water, a full furnished kitchen with dishwasher and full bathroom with tub and shower, stone fireplace, barbecue grills (charcoal & propane), sunroom with three glass walls, a small library of books, wood-burning stove, TV/VCR/DVD setup for snuggling down on rainy days (no WiFi), and a bonfire area by the beach. There are also tables and chairs for lounging by the beach, and a small porch to catch the breezes. Bed and kitchen linens are provided; bring your favorite bath and beach towels. Wading, swimming, and snorkeling are easy in the comfortable, clear lake water—not frigid in summertime—with a soft sandy bottom and gradual slope to depth. A canoe, two kayaks, and a rowboat is available for use. The lake is ideal for waterskiing, if you want to bring your own speedboat, or rent one locally. Life on the Lake: Ducks, gulls, and loons are often found on the lake, with seasonal wolf calls in the distance. Black bears are occasional visitors in the surrounding woods. Fishing for bass, pike, lake trout, walleye and bluegill on our lake and other nearby lakes is available (fishing permit needed). It is rare but not unheard-of to see the Northern Lights; stars are highly visible for those with telescopes, binoculars or simply a developing sense of wonder. Nearby Algonquin Park is a huge wilderness area offering hiking trails of various lengths for exploring, as well as many lakes to hike around or swim/boat in and an attractive Visitor’s Center and Museum, with a stunning overlook. Nearby is a museum on the history of logging in the Northwoods of North America, complete with hands-on exhibits of tools and equipment. There is a nice art gallery not too far away, and plenty of fun shopping in the little nearby towns. Canoeing or camping options are plentiful. Please call or text for more information and weekly cost.
