Book Recommendation: King's Cross
This is a book about Jesus—Jesus as he is portrayed in the Gospel of Mark. Keller says, “It is an extended meditation on the historical Christian premise that Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection form the central event of cosmic and human history as well as the central organizing principle of the world—and how we fit into it—is most clearly understood through a careful, direct look at the story of Jesus. My purpose here is to try to show, through his words and actions, how beautifully his life makes sense of ours.” Understand Jesus and you will understand the world: that is the central premise of the book.

Workshop Opportunity: Building Relationships Through Small Groups
Location: Fellowship Hall
Start Time: Sat 17, Sept. 2011, 11:45 a.m.
End Time: Sat 17, Sept. 2011, 4 p.m.
Earlier this year, Parkside's leadership team set forth their vision for our church family for building into the next generation. Among the key areas of focus for this vision is the importance of relationships: being in a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ; being built up in Christ through relationships with other believers; and, being active in promoting the gospel through relationships with unbelievers.

Smaller Group Roundup 2011: One Size Does Not Fit All
Let's face it...Parkside is a big church. With almost 3,000 people attending Sunday services, it's easy to feel a little lost in the crowd. How can you make a big place feel smaller? It's easy! Join a smaller group! As we look toward Building into the Next Generation, we believe that developing solid, Christ-centered relationships is an essential building block for growing Parkside's church family.
As fall approaches, our ministries are ready to get back into full swing. We invite you to check one out that's right for you!

Book Recommendation: The Next Story
Even the least technical among us are being pressed from all sides by advances in digital technology. We rely upon computers, cell phones, and the Internet for communication, commerce, and entertainment. Yet even though we live in this ‘instant message’ culture, many of us feel disconnected, and we question if all this technology is really good for our souls.

We are LOOKing for Sunday Morning Children
What do Children’s Ministry Workers LOOK like?
- People who like to have fun (what beats play dough & animal crackers?)
- People who like a challenge (some of our classroom puzzles are really hard!)
- People who like to learn (are you smarter than a 5th grader? Kids ask tough questions!)
- People who want to build relationships with others
- People who are members and regular attendees of Parkside for a minimum of six months
- People of all ages and stages of life—teens, singles, couples, retirees
- People who love the Lord Jesus Christ and who desire to see the next generation come to know and love Christ

Book Recommendation: What is a Healthy Church Member?
Jenny surprised me when she started crying during our membership interview. The first twenty minutes of the interview were fairly routine. She recounted her childhood growing up in a Christian home, her high school years filled with fear, and a period of living as a prodigal during college. Then she recalled with some joy her conversion experience in a hometown local church.

The Gospel and Humor
I was reading a review of the movie Prince Caspian in a newspaper for urban downtown-types, and the article dripped with sarcastic, sneering, smirking humor that, among other things, referred to Susan’s horn as a phallic symbol. Humor is like seasoning on food—everything is flat without it. But something was amiss here. I began to ask myself, “Does the gospel have an effect on our sense of humor?” The answer has to be yes—but why and how?
