"A Game Changer": Why this Chaplain Believes in Crossroads

John, a regional chaplain overseeing 110 chaplains across 40 prisons in Kenya, has witnessed the impact of the Crossroads program firsthand as people in the prisons he oversees give their lives to Christ and grow in their faith.

“Some even become leaders, discipling others inside and outside the prison walls,” he shared.

One story that stands out to him is that of Charles, a man convicted of murder. Charles embraced the Crossroads program, took on leadership responsibilities, and assisted John with coordinating the distribution of lessons for six years. Upon his release, he reunited with his wife and now serves as a church elder.

“Hearing how the church trusts him today is very encouraging,” John said.

He believes one of the most powerful aspects of the Crossroads program is the mentorship component.

“The [student] is not alone in this journey. The handwritten letters of encouragement from mentors are a game changer,” he explained.

Many students who complete the program go on to share their faith with the prison officers and those incarcerated alongside them, encouraging others to sign up.

John emphasizes the essential role of faith-based programs like Crossroads in rehabilitation. “If you take away faith-based organizations, then you don’t have prison reform,” he stated.

Crossroads not only helps people in prison engage with the Word of God but also connects them with mentors who walk alongside them without judgment. He actively encourages chaplains to support the program, calling it “a valuable, practical, and simple program with real impact.”

He has seen how it helps incarcerated people recognize that they are not defined by society’s labels but by God’s love and purpose for them.
