Preparing for the Inheritance
Before God allowed the Israelites to enter the Promised Land, in Joshua 5, he commanded Joshua to circumcise the sons of Israel. God prepared his people in this way so that they might be reminded of the internal reality that this external surgery represented. In circumcising his people, God metaphorically cut away their ties to Egypt so they could begin life anew in the Promised Land. True circumcision is not merely external, but internal. Likewise, believers today are not defined by our sin, but by the righteousness of Jesus Christ imputed to us, and received by faith alone.
