A Reformation of Righteousness
For Martin Luther, the words of Romans 1:17—“the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith”—initially provoked terror. He later discovered that the righteousness God requires is the very righteousness he provides in Christ. The Law exposes our sin and our utter inability to meet God’s holy standard, but the gospel reveals a righteousness freely given through faith alone. What once condemned Luther became his comfort: Christ’s perfect righteousness credited to sinners. True reformation begins when we see our sin, cling to Christ alone, and are revived by the sweetness of his saving grace.
