Acts 14:1-18

Acts 14:1-18

Now at Iconium they entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. But the people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles. When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them, they learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country, and there they continued to preach the gospel.

Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was crippled from birth and had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well, 10 said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he sprang up and began walking. 11 And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!” 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. 13 And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds. 14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out, 15 “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. 16 In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. 17 Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.” 18 Even with these words they scarcely restrained the people from offering sacrifice to them.

Reflection

When the people of Lystra saw the power of God at work in Barnabas and Paul, they mistakenly believed that these two men were divine (Acts 14:11). But Barnabas and Paul were jealous to preserve God’s glory rather than their own. They knew that the power to heal the crippled man came from Jesus, and they knew that they had been sent to share the good news about Jesus (v. 15). Those who proclaim the gospel must realize that they are no more than rescued sinners, filled with the Holy Spirit, sent to share the good news.

Revelation 2:12-17

Revelation 2:12-17

12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: ‘The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.

13 “‘I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality. 15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’

Reflection

The church in Pergamum clings to the name of Jesus (Rev. 2:13), but they have allowed compromise to slip into the church by embracing false teaching that results both in eating food sacrificed to idols and in sexual immorality (v. 14). In response, Jesus threatens to war against them with the doubleedged (v. 12) “sword of [his] mouth” (i.e., his Word, v. 16; cf. Eph. 6:17; Heb. 4:12; Rev. 19:15, 21). Once again, this church must turn from sin back to Christ (“repent”; 2:16). Those who respond to these words from God’s Spirit will receive a new name (v. 17).

Psalm 101:1-4

Psalm 101:1-4

I will sing of steadfast love and justice;
to you, O Lord, I will make music.
I will ponder the way that is blameless.
Oh when will you come to me?
I will walk with integrity of heart
within my house;
I will not set before my eyes
anything that is worthless.
I hate the work of those who fall away;
it shall not cling to me.
A perverse heart shall be far from me;
I will know nothing of evil.

Thoughts For Prayer

God designed sexual desire as a powerful force to be enjoyed exclusively within the context of marriage between one man and one woman. Pray that the love and sacrifice of Jesus would overpower all attraction to sexual immorality and strengthen you to resist sinful urges.

    Supported Workers: Jon (& Ruthie), Matt (& Laura) Pheneger, Goran (& Beth) Tomic

    Country: United States of America

    Jon (& Ruthie), Matt (& Laura) Pheneger, Goran (& Beth) Tomic, Ambassadors Football, United States In 2007, Goran made an exploratory trip to Chile to see if Ambassadors could start soccer ministry there. In 2008, the Dwyer family officially launched Ambassadors Chile, which has been growing ever since. Last month, at the Salvation Army camp outside Santiago, Goran along with 40+ men and women from Mexico, USA, Brazil, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Chile gathered for a four-day training to encourage, equip, and provide resources for ministry in local churches and to explore ideas for global cross-cultural service. They proclaimed the Word of God, worshiped, shared testimonies, and worked on how to connect and serve more efficiently locally, nationally, and globally. Please pray for these brothers and sisters in Christ who attended the training as they seek to implement what they learned.

    Antigua and Barbuda (Caribbean). Population: 94,816 Believers: 19.9%. Antiguans are almost all Christian by background, including many evangelicals, but complacency prevails in the face of serious moral and spiritual challenges. Pray for revival that galvanizes Christians to prayer and for involvement that impacts their society.

    Aruba (Caribbean). Population: 106,177 Believers: 7.6%. The evangelical presence has grown, predominantly due to the more recent arrivals. Large numbers have immigrated from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia, but evangelical growth is not even. There are several English-speaking churches and many congregations using Papiamento. Pray for a greater impact on the Asian immigrant population. From Operation World DVD-ROM 2010 and www.operationworld.org
