Luke 12:35-48
Luke 12:35-48
35 “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning, 36 and be like men who are waiting for their master to come home from the wedding feast, so that they may open the door to him at once when he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes. Truly, I say to you, he will dress himself for service and have them recline at table, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes in the second watch, or in the third, and finds them awake, blessed are those servants! 39 But know this, that if the master of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have left his house to be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
41 Peter said, “Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all?” 42 And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. 44 Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. 45 But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. 47 And that servant who knew his master's will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. 48 But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.
Reflection
Jesus teaches us to live our lives now in light of what is to come. He wants his people to remember that he could return at any time, so they must remain “dressed for action” (Luke 12:35), “awake” (v. 38), “ready” (v. 40), and performing their duties faithfully (v. 42).
Even those who deeply trust Christ must remember that the deceitful desires of sin (cf. Eph. 4:22) still lurk within our hearts, requiring careful scrutiny and resistance. By keeping the promise of Christ’s return before our eyes we can guard ourselves from the subtle drift into a careless lifestyle of self-indulgence that harms others and ourselves (Luke 12:45).
Colossians 2:6-15
Colossians 2:6-15
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10 and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority. 11 In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. 13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Reflection
Through the use of the simple yet profound phrase “in him,” Paul reveals resources available to combat falsehood. In union with Christ, Christians have been rooted, built up, and established in faith (Col. 2:7). In Christ they have been filled with the same authority that Christ possesses (v. 10). In Christ they have been cut off from the present evil realm of the “flesh” (v. 11). In him they have “died” to sin and have been “raised” to new life through Christ’s death and resurrection (v. 12). In him they have been forgiven of all their spiritual debts because of the cross (v. 13). In him they have the certainty of victory over Satan and death (v. 15).
Believers should also practice their daily lives in Christ (vv. 6–7). In other words, the profound truths of the gospel are necessary for our daily obedience. Our motivation and strength to follow the instructions of Jesus are due to the fact that we have already experienced his grace. We can “walk in him” (v. 6) only because of what he has already accomplished on our behalf.
Psalm 30:2-3
Psalm 30:2-3
2 O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,
and you have healed me.
3 O Lord, you have brought up my soul from Sheol;
you restored me to life from among those who go down to the pit.
Thoughts For Prayer
Strengthen your ability to obey Christ by prayerfully remembering what he has already accomplished for you. We are not called to start from scratch and fix ourselves. We are called to become who Christ has already made us to be.

Supported Workers: Fieldstone Counseling
Country: United States of America
Fieldstone Counseling celebrated eight years of ministry last month and is grateful for our help and continued prayers. As they step into year nine, their commitment remains the same—to come alongside those facing life’s hardships, offering lasting hope through biblically-based, Christ-centered, and clinically informed care. Join them in praying that individuals and families living in Ann Arbor, Michigan, their newest location, would connect with them for counseling. Pray that their counselors would be strengthened and encouraged as they walk alongside those who are hurting, offering the hope found only in Christ.
New Zealand (Pacific). Population: 5,251,899 Believers: 18.2%. Christianity is on a precipitous decline in New Zealand. The largest group is now “no religion” at 48%. New Age spirituality focuses on individualism and nature and attracts many Kiwis (New Zealanders) who feel disappointed by the church. But 24/7 prayer rooms and other recent prayer groups prove that God still moves in the Kiwi church! The recent decline is more a case of the pruning of nominal Christianity—what remains is much more alive. Pray that God will pour his Holy Spirit into the church and draw back the many who have left.
