Drivers Needed for Cancer Patients

The American Cancer Society is in need of volunteers to help get local patients to their cancer treatments. This year alone an estimated 66,000 Ohio residents will learn that they have cancer and many of them will not feel well enough to drive and may not have friends or family available to help get them to their treatment. The ACS program, called Road to Recovery, helps those with cancer overcome this critical barrier to treatment. In 2015, the Road to Recovery program was able to provide 255 rides for Cuyahoga County residents to get to their important appointments. In 2016, it provided 400 rides to Cuyahoga County residents. We are getting more requests every day and are hoping to spread the word about Road to Recovery to find a few more people who would be willing to help.

A volunteer for Road to Recovery would learn about a patient in their community who has asked for help and could volunteer to pick them up and drive them to their treatment facility. Every appointment is different so volunteer drivers can choose to donate their time on a case-by-case basis depending on their availability and comfortability. Volunteers must be between the ages of 18-85 and have: a current, valid driver’s license; access to a safe and reliable vehicle; a good driving record; proof of adequate automobile insurance and willing to complete a training to help prepare for the role.
