God’s gracious answers to your prayers

In our last Beans’Talk we had a number of prayer requests. We’d like to briefly comment on them, for God graciously answered.

1. Peruvian Bible Society webinar

There were nearly 300 people signed on to the Peruvian Bible Society’s webinar that Mark taught. We couldn’t keep track of all the countries represented in the audience; at least a dozen. Plus, one friend mentioned there were yet more people watching via Facebook. The feedback has been positive. Mark spoke on how all translations make adjustments to fit the target language, illustrating with examples from a popular Spanish version of the Bible.

2. Training future consultants

February 21–25, was the week-long online training for Latino translation consultants-in-training. After Mark taught all Tuesday morning, a colleague mentioned that he had been skeptical wondering how Mark was going to safely talk about the breadth of evangelical positions on two doctrinal issues. We are thankful that instead of being divisive, it seemed to be helpful.

3. Explore Wycliffe Live

March 8th we were part of Wycliffe’s regularly scheduled Explore Wycliffe Live. While there was a very modest-sized audience, the hosts explained that usually the recordings are repeatedly accessed afterwards. We pray that our interview will be another encouragement to help nudge people into involvement in Bible translation. (We just learned that it accidentally wasn’t recorded. Wycliffe wants us to make a new recording for their website.)

4. Chemo treatments

February 1 and 2 Mark started his new chemo regimen to knock his lymphoma back down. Month one consisted of four infusions. The plan was to continue for four to six months. In March the protocol changed to two consecutive days a month for up to eighteen months! So far Mark has tolerated the treatment well.

5. On hold: more people to help

The one-day training session to equip people to get Quechua Bibles out to mountain communities has been postponed. One of the key organizers had surgery in February and is still recovering.

Two moves for mom

Since our last letter we received a request to move Mom Bean to a memory care unit because the facility she was in didn’t have the level of care she needed. Thankfully, there was an opening in an excellent place fairly close by. The move was not easy for mom. When we started to draft this letter, she was in a steep decline. As we anticipated her final move we sang to her, hugged her and reminded her that Jesus was waiting to receive her with open arms. March 10th she made her last move, exiting this world to an eternal one. Mom was one of our best cheerleaders. When we were in Peru, she never complained about not seeing us or her grandchildren. She was always looking for ways to cheerfully serve us.

Praise and Prayer Requests

Praise for the wonderful opportunities Mark had to teach in different settings and the encouraging responses. Pray for people to hear the call to be future translators and consultants.

Praise for excellent medical care so close by. Pray that these chemo treatments will keep Mark’s body working well for as long as God has something for him here.

* Praise for these years we’ve been close by to serve Mom Bean. Praise for the tender care shown to her by those in her facility as well as the hospice nurses and caretakers. Praise that one of Mark’s sisters was with her when she peacefully exited this world.

We thank God for the privilege of serving him and for his goodness to us! We praise him for the hope we have of spending eternity with him!
