You may have seen the stats relating to last year´s drop in the number of Catholics in Austria. The year we arrived here (1979) the number of RCs officially dropping their membership was 20.897. By 1982 that number had climbed to the horrible level of 32.260, and then there was even a spike to 37.154 in 1989. The bad years thereafter were 1995, 1999 (all three with ca. 43-44.000 “Austritte”). Then came the disastrous year 2004 with 52.177 which itself was exceeded by the all time record of 53.216 in 2009. However 2010 [87.393] beat the old record with a jump of 64%!
