The Bean Family

- Praise for the wonderful whirlwind trip Patti had in May to meet the Beans' two youngest grandchildren and pop in on each of their four children. She also stopped to visit her sister & wounded-warrior nephew as well as attend the dinner of her 40th high school reunion. The trip was a great gift.

- The training in using Quechua materials scheduled for school teachers the first and second of May was postponed and happened without Patti. That's actually better! Meanwhile, there are more other opportunities to work with pastors in the Huamlies area to help them read better in Quechua. Pray for the team that goes out: Bernardo and Leoncio.

Keeping languages untangled

We’re still in Huaraz with its beautiful snowcaps. We took this picture right outside our door the other morning.

One day last week, one of the men’s wives came to visit. In the course of the visit, she asked a simple question:

The ubiquitous moto-taxi

Meet the moto-taxi. You couldn’t find a single one of these when we first arrived in Huánuco. Now, they are everywhere.

For about $0.50 to $0.60 (depending on the exchange rate) you can get a ride anywhere around town on this side of the river. While we prefer to walk most places, a moto-taxi is the way to get home after shopping at the market or visiting the bank.

Recently two incidents happened with moto-taxis. Now, that you’ve been properly introduced, we’ll tell you the stories.

Pointing out the obvious

I remember in first grade when my teacher taught us how to pluralize by adding a magic “s” or an “es” to a noun. All of us already knew how to speak correctly with plurals. But, we probably couldn’t have explained why we spoke the way we did until the teacher pointed it out to us. That is a tiny peek into what’s been going on these past few weeks during the discourse for translation workshop. Of course, they have been learning at a much different level than first grade!

Not Never‐Neverland

Imagine if someone told you they had visited Never-Neverland. At first you’d think they were joking. Then, you’d be incredulous. What? It really exists? You’re kidding!!

When Mark recently mentioned that he had been to Israel and visited Jerusalem, Bethlehem and other places, one believer had the incredulous response: What?? They really exist? You’ve been there?

 Listening to God’s Word

When our co-worker Shatu came to this cur-rent translation workshop we asked him how the mini-players called “Papyrus” are being used in his area. These are the players that each hold the recorded New Testament. In his town of about 1,000 or so, there are three Papyrus players. Eight different home groups listen to them. He said that in numer-ous smaller villages people show up to church a half hour earlier than usual to listen to God’s word. He mentioned that a couple Catholic catequists in the area also use the Papyrus. One said she doesn’t mind that people call her a “protestant” because she’s making God’s word available for her flock. She said, “Everybody likes hearing God’s word.”

Yesterday was day one of another translation workshop. Mark did not look good. By afternoon he was shivering with a fever, but thinking he'd be just fine today. Well...he is stretched out and konked out in bed.

There are some things the guys can continue to do on their own and make progress. But, yesterday as I worked in the same room I saw how many times Mark rescued men and computers, keeping them from writing on the same file at the same time and other inadvertant mistakes. Plus, I saw all the teaching and explaining Mark does throughout the day. Plus, he prepares more work for them and checks over the work they are doing. None of that is happening right now.

Soccer in Peru

Peru is not a soccer powerhouse. The last time it made it to the World Cup was 30 years ago at the 1982 games in Italy. In Sep-tember and October Peru played in four qual-ifying games. There’s not a lot to shout about, but for those who are fervent fans, there is still a sliver of hope for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
